Before the 2002 came the 1600, intended as the entry level BMW, with a 1600cc version of the excellent 4 cylinder engine in a smaller 2 door shell. The 2002 was a happy accident, by dropping a bigger engine into the good handling 1600, BMW created the defining sports sedan of the 1970s, making it big in the USA and never looking back.
The BMW 1600 continued in its shadow, often bought by older drivers who liked the quality and didn’t need 4 doors. As a result, survival of the 1600 has been good, and this desirable round-light example looks great for the money (so check that it is real….). Claiming just 100000 Kms from new, this example is in the typical dark green with spartan black interior. Paint may not be original, but all the trim is there and seems to be undamaged, including the hubcaps. Under bonnet presents well. Owner claims that the car is rust free and in generally good condition.
Neither fast nor slow, this looks like a car which you could enjoy as it is, or uprate sympathetically whilst maintaining originality.Snag? It is on the isle of Madeira, so export would involve ferry transportation to the mainland.
